About six years ago, I was teaching Earth Science for Middle Schoolers in Ann Arbor. I had a sudden change in position, finding that I would be teaching Life Science. In preparation, I went to Safari Club International in Wyoming, for intensive summer training and course credits. When I returned, I had to finalize my credits by researching the conditions of local wildlife. I contacted Tom Ulrich, to interview him on threatened wild life in our area. Mr. Ulrich patiently answered all of my questions, and provided detailed information about the habitat and conditions of several species found in the Sleeping Dune area. I discovered that he also served out West on a variety of projects; including stabilizing and replenishing the peregrine falcon population, and the restoration of native grasslands. He also has experience in law enforcement and fire-fighting. Thanks to Mr. Ulrich’s expertise and patient explanations, I was able to complete my course work. Nothing required him to be this helpful! Therefore, I cannot imagine that anyone else could be better suited for this position! I hope Mr. Ulrich becomes the new superintendent of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.
