Comment on Loss and longing: the art of Michael Huey by Judith Oetinger

Thank you for a wonderful article on Michael Huey. His family legacy lives thru him and, personally having spent just about every summer of my youth and adulthood here, I was able to witness and experience the stunning beauty of the dunes and forest of his childhood in and around Glen Arbor. The Homestead and school..after the camp, were highly respected in every way. When the Huey family lost their “home,” we all did. The Homestead and then the loss of Sugar Loaf to developers without care for the community, families and the resulting impact on the land and the environment, has been terribly sad. I find Michael’s book, Straight as a Pine, to be fascinating and a look into an era that must have been the ideal for every young man who was lucky enough to land at camp and/or school during that time frame. Michael wrote with enthusiasm and knowledge of his first home and the idealic life so many were able to experience. The loss of his childhood home and, consequently, the road he embarked on, have formed an amazing and gifted artist , historian and author. What a treasure, and to think, Leelanau County has drawn him back to it after years away..gives me hope he will share his art and stories for years to come!
