Comment on Immigration Challenges in Leelanau: Who Will Harvest Our Produce? by Kris

The concept of “if you do not agree than just stay home” is a lot of what many of us are battling right now. Yes, the concept here is important however the political view slant utilized here is what we are referring to as a detractor of relevance of the point behind the meeting. We want to be inclusionary, we want to encourage work and we want to ensure safety and fair treatment to all. However, suggesting that we ignore legal status because we want our produce picked is a negative view and more racist than any statement. We encourage labor and success but we also have a set of rules and guidelines to follow. We must ensure that workers have legal status within the country. We must ensure that employers ensure workers are legal. Through this verification we ensure that workers are paid no less than minimum wage and in turn are afforded all of the rights and legal protections under LARA here in Michigan. If we propose to ignore legal status then we in fact strip potential workers of all of their human and legal rights as they no longer are afforded protection as an employee and have no legal recourse to file a complaint. Employers may mistreat them, may fail to pay them or not pay as much as they agreed. The concept of ensuring legal status and sticking to regulation is in reality to benefit the employees via their rights and protections, the employers via their ability to legally register labor expenses on their reports and the general population via employment and employee taxes paid for the benefit of us all.
