A very well written and thoughtful article.
The on-going discussion about cause(s)of weather change should not impede gathering and analyzing data, to ascertain if a new and different weather pattern is emerging.
Equally important (if not more so), are searches for short term solutions to protect crops. Here in California, wind machines long ago replaced the “smudge pots” to guard against frost damage to groves of citrus fruit. Those fans reduced air pollution; reduced labor costs (it took lots of people to fuel and fire those pots); increased reliability, and reduced response time and crop damage (one rancher can start the fans; but lots of college and high school labor was needed, on very short notice, to stoke and tend the pots all night).
Michigan cherry farmers, in conjunction with university based researchers, need to explore such options. After all, when it rains, you don’t argue why; you put on a coat, and get out the umbrella – the discussion can wait til you’re dry.
