Comment on Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail receives $1.62 million by Marilyn Miller

This is a tragedy and a boondoggle. There are many great bike riding areas within the Lakeshore, many on beautiful, quiet county roads. More asphalt-paved, wide bike “trails” will unnecessarily destroy millions of trees, wetlands, native plants and wildlife habitat that the Lakeshore’s mission statement vows to protect. The extensions will create another paved road, with a clearcut zone of 20-30 feet, either within view of the M-22 corridor or back in the interior deep, mature forest, all the way from south of Empire to Good Harbor Road north of Little Traverse Lake. If you love the scenic drive along M-22 you should be against adding another parallel road next to it. Make no mistake — this so-called “trail” is a road, a transportation corridor, built with heavy road-building equipment.
