Comment on Sugar Loaf’s characters: where are they now? by Betsy Galloway H.

My family (The Galloway’s) just had a reunion at Sugarloaf last week. We stayed at the Condo’s/ Townhouses at the bottom of the slope.

Very enjoyable seeing Leland, Glen Arbor, The Dunes and Good Harbor Bay where our cottage had been prior to the National Park taking it over.

Three of us hiked up the slope to the top to see the views and take pictures. It was sad to see the graffiti up there and the dilapidated buildings. The ski lifts seemed to be frozen in time. What a shame from its glory days. The lodge below was fenced off and looked in bad shape.

Walking back through the woods on the hill towards the golf course, we were warned that we were trespassing and not to go back up the hill. The new owner would prosecute. I understand about the vandalism, but we’re in our sixties reminiscing over old times. Enjoying the scenery from out of state. There were no signs telling us to stay off the mountain. Not sure a trespassing charge would actually stick without being posted.

We also checked out Timberlee Hills. A new owner has taken over and is opening the hill to inner tubing in winter and making it a wedding venue as well. He’s interested in acquiring old photos during Timberlee’s skiing heyday if anyone has some that he can get framed and display.
