I, Kathy Plum Gaffke ’59, missed The Pippi experience. But I enjoyed the original Sugar Loaf skiing. We were school bused to the site, dropped off, carried our equipment to the old farm house at the bottom of the hill. There, around a botbellied wood burning heater in the middle of the former living room, we students got our boots on and ventured outside, fixed our skiis, skiied to the rope tow(only lift) where we’re dragged up Sugar Loaf to get a chance to enjoyl this wonderful sport. How basic was that set up. What an effort and commitment but well worth it. What a memory. We had some out standing skiiers in our class… Mickey Joint and George Stevens(photo in Life Magazine??) did jumps, flips and swan dives to take your breath away..”Hotdogging” it was called, I believe. “Spenny” Russell Bishop, “Ticky” Arthur Huey, etc.,were hot on their trail as were several other very advanced guy skiers from our class.
Unbelievable talent from our little school.
