Comment on Mourning for deer by Mary B

Deer definitely do mourn. Last night I found an injured fawn laying helplessly in the grass. I stopped to see if I could help and the mother appeared a few feet away. She paced around the yard and continuously appeared from the woods to check on it. The cops came and shot the fawn since it was too badly injured. The very next evening the mother appeared again and paced around the spot where the fawn lay the night before. This is uncommon since my neighborhood is heavily populated. I knew she was there for her baby and it was so sad. I apologized to the doe and offered my condolences. She then walked torwards me (also uncommon) and stood about 5 ft away, She grunted like she was trying to communicate with me. I did not feel threatened at all. I watched her stand in the same spot the fawn died for about 10 minutes and I was in tears. I felt her pain. I realized animals do have emotions, and I sensed she was truly heartbroken.
