This segment of the Heritage Trail covers the most environmentally sensitive areas of the whole 27 mile grand plan — wetlands, creeks, mature forests without existing pathways, fragile dunes. Is it worth the environmental cost, not to mention the financial cost, to build five more miles of paved bikeway? People have to decide whether they want to personally contribute to this construction, given what we know about the importance of trees to mitigating climate change and the high environmental and financial costs of the project. And, news just in, there’s a 275 mile bike path across the state of Michigan, from South Haven to Port Huron, and four more cross-state bike paths in the works. So is this five-mile extension in such an environmentally sensitive area in a national park really necessary? It’s up to us to decide.
