Comment on Fight COVID. Fight plastic. Wear cloth masks. by John in Leland

I’m all for less plastic use, but COVID hygiene is an example of where there’s just no substitute for disposable products.

Woven cloth masks are too porous, they just aren’t very effective at preventing an asymptomatic person from infecting others, which is the #1 benefit of masks. And, they give the wearer virtually zero protection from others! So-called surgical masks, the kind you most often find in stores, have some plastic in them but are a lot more effective because the plastic has much smaller holes, so it provides quite good protection for others, and some protection for the wearer. What’s more, if your mask becomes contaminated, even on the outside, wearing it actually increases your chances of getting COVID, vs. no mask at all!

Other than staying isolated (which saves gas), bulky, very expensive hazmat masks that require special training to use, disposable masks are the best possible protection. And, getting sick uses a lot of resources, which is bad for the environment. This is one of the few times when disposable plastic masks, disposed of properly, are truly a green solution.
