Since we are summer only residents at Glen Lake living the rest of the year in Princeton, NJ, we have been encouraged, up until now, with the low number of Covid cases in Leelanau County hoping, of course, that next summer’s experience would be back to normal. Learning now of the Nov. 2 Traverse City Trump rally “attended by thousands” as you report, is a real blow to our expectations. It is unfortunately further evidence that stupidity is no stranger to the area thus bursting the Leelanau County bubble which at one point during the virus scourge was an outlier success story. Too bad! We’ll continue here in our part of New Jersey to wear masks in all cases and avoid situations where other people don’t. The erudite social critic of the past (1920’s), H. L. Mencken, was right on (today’s figure of speech) when he observed that “no one ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American people.”
