My family and extended family owned property on Little Traverse and Good Harbor Bay for many years. One of aunts had 200 acres just West of the Shalda’s farm. She and Louise Shalda were best friends. We used to go to George and Polly Shalda’s store almost daily. The Shalda’s and other members of the Bohemian settlers are found in the Cleveland Township cemetery about a quarter mile South of this corner. As a youngster, I marveled at the skill of Vete Nachazel of nearby Maple City,, as he prepared properties for building with his bulldozer. He was also the only guy I ever saw who could roll a perfectly formed cigarette on his tongue. He would place a paper on his tounge, sprinkle tobacco on it, roll it into his mouth and push out the cigarette!
