Comment on Celebrate National Trails Day on Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail by Marilyn Miller

I don’t see anything to celebrate about a wide paved bike road, ill conceived from the beginning and poorly planned, that runs the whole length of a national park through deep forests, fragile dune scrublands, and wetlands — areas that we thought Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore was established to protect forever. Sleeping Bear Naturally is a group of people whose souls are refreshed by the beauty of the Sleeping Bear area and who want the National Park Service to be true to its mission and purpose to preserve and protect these precious lands for future generations. We are calling for a moratorium on further construction of the Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail so that a full Environmental Impact Statement can be done. The four mile zone of destruction that is Segment 1 is enough. Don’t let them pave any more of the forest! Please read our Fact Sheet on our website, http://www.sleepingbearnaturally.org., and join us to keep informed and share your opinions. Let’s work together to influence the National Park Service to stop the paving and destruction!
