Comment on Reflections on 50 years of Sleeping Bear by Betty Runion Pealer

Thank you for the article about the scenic drive. I bit older than you, I was from one of those local families who thought the drive was exploitive and materialistic. Little did I know how much the whole area was soon to be “exploited”. As an adult, I explored the scenic drive and all it’s stops, and realized it is more protected/preserved than it would have been had it been made into wealthy private homes for no one to enjoy except the “chosen few”. I now appreciate the foresight your father had, and hope the drive is there for future generations to enjoy. The area is so very sacred to me, and I hope there are others who are looking to the future best interest of the land, rather than themselves. Maybe I will come to appreciate the bike path in this way, too – but I’m not there yet.
