Comment on High in the treetops above Glen Lake? by Mary Beth Kelley-Lowe

We purchased “Top of the World” in 1982 on a land contract with the Byes. We have co-owned it with our brother and sister in law for 31 years. Our intent has been to hold on to a little bit of the most beautiful place on earth. Change is inevitable. Since we purchased the land the trees have grown taller, there are more birds, the morels are plentiful and the raspberries and ash have been replaced by young hard wood trees and secondary forest. We have never built on the land, we have not logged it, and we never sold any of it (although we have had offers). We keep it to enjoy the inevitable change of nature, left alone, growing more beautiful with each decade. We were sad when they widened Fritz Road from a lane to a bus worthy route in the 90′s and took so many trees. We knew the increased traffic would help families and children and some tourists to go across the county, but the road remains quiet and supports the inevitable change we are seeking in Kasson County; nature, beauty, solitude and preservation of the land. The proposed change would bring the kind of traffic and the tourism that would not enhance anything, but rather threaten what makes this place the ‘Top of the World”.
