Please don’t assume the concerns about the Heritage Trail are promoted by inactive people. I have skied and hiked on every trail in the park for decades. I am very fit and do not need a paved trail to enjoy the park. As for the limestone, your are simply wrong. Avid bicyclists from all over the Midwest enjoy the Katy Trail across Missouri on crushed limestone. The urban activities should not even be a factor. In fact, avid, hard core cyclists rarely use the Heritage Trail as they would be dodging families and casual cyclists. My father has crossed the country on a road bike and has ridden in Leelanau for decades; for serious bikers, unless after tourist season, the trail is unsafe– too many people. As far as the dune climb, the ecology of this area is suffering and anyone who has been here a long time has witnessed it. Urbanizing the park will not be good for it in the long term as the sandy, forested lands are not going to thrive if human usage increases.
