I am witnessing this behavior now. I watched a deer fall lifeless in the woods yesterday behind the house and the herd seems to be protecting the body. Either that, or they are mourning, almost seems as if they are waiting for the fallen one to get up. It is sad, as there are a few young ones that I hope have not lost their mother.
