Sleeping Bear Naturally is a group of nature lovers who want to encourage the National Lakeshore to be true to its mission to PRESERVE AND PROTECT the magnificent resources of the Sleeping Bear area for future generations. We joined together to oppose the SBHT, which should properly be called a bike road, not a trail. We don’t agree with the Little Traverse Lake property owners’ proposal to put the paved bike road along the shoreline of Good Harbor Bay. That is part of the wilderness enacted by Congress where anything mechanized, such as bicycles, is not allowed. We are looking forward to meeting with Superintendent Tucker to address these concerns. We think the bike road should end with this segment being constructed now. The next segment north is full of wetlands, streams, forested dunes, and mature trees, and would be the most expensive segment to construct and maintain. It is the farthest from centers of population and would get the least use, so the cost/benefit ratio does not justify building the bike road further north.
