Talk is good. Action without a point is not. The story didn’t mention any discussions about the causes of school violence or what students, faculty and community can do to address the root causes, only school safety. With rights comes responsibility.

BTW, you do know that the largest school massacre happened here in Michigan and didn’t involve guns, right? Or that the second largest occurred in Germany with an improvised flame thrower? Do your children know that?

Schools represent the single largest symbol of social life for a teenager. As such, they will always be a target for the mentally disturbed teen. Take away guns and they will find other ways to act out and call attention to themselves such as driving a car through the bus line or throwing a Molotov cocktail through a window. What about the media ‘s responsibility for sensationalizing tragedies, leading to copy-cat tragedies? Did your children discuss any of that? It wasn’t mentioned in the article.

Full Disclosure: I am a Boomer who saw plenty of protests in my time. I have never owned a gun, never hunted and don’t belong to the NRA. We have two grown sons who also fit that description. We have neices and nephews who are Glen Lake graduates. I do have a brother who is a retired FBI agent and two in-laws who are police detectives in Seattle, capital of the People’s Republic of Washington. I have also worked as an independent educational consultant to families of high school students looking to go to college. My father was a forced laborer in Nazi Germany, despite being a 15 year-old American-born Catholic. My politics are Libertarian.

I am always available for in-person open-minded discussion, usually over a beer.
