Comment on Leelanau School students walk out to protest Climate Change by John Volk

EDITED FOR TYPOS:
I wonder if the Leelanau School students are familiar with Huntington’s poem about the humility of King Canute.
I wonder if they know the composition of the Earth’s atmosphere and that CO2 constitutes all of 400 ppm or .04 of 1% of the atmosphere. (the air is 77% nitrogen, 20% oxygen, and 3% everything else, the largest of which is Argon, an inert gas.)
I wonder if they know that water vapor is the biggest greenhouse gas.
I wonder if they know that plants need CO2 to thrive and that below 165 ppm, plants begin to die.
I wonder if they can tell me if rising levels of CO2 are a leading or a lagging indicator of a warming climate; that as plants thrive and plant life increases in a warming environment, more CO2 is produced.
I wonder if they know that during the Little Ice Age in the Elizabethan era, the Thames river regularly froze over to such an extent that shopkeppers moved their stores out onto the ice and that England was Europe’s leading producer of wine. For that matter, can they even point to the Thames on a map and describe the Elizabethan period?
I wonder if they know what Maunder minimums are or if they know that the Earth is not a perfect sphere and is of greater diameter at the equator, that it circles the sun in an elliptical orbit, and that it rotates in a barely perceptible wobble and over thousands of years its geophysical poles – the magnetic poles also shift poles – and that scientists think this phenomenon may have produced the Ice Ages and had a much greater impact on climate change than anything mankind has done or is capable doing.
I wonder if when studying Michael Mann’s regression analysis that produced his famous “hockey stick” graph associating increases in global warming with rising levels of CO2 only represents association and not causation.
I wonder if they know that people like Leonardo DiCaprio, Al Gore, and Michael Moore are some of the biggest hypocrites as they fly their personal jets and cruise their yachts around the world to attend global climate meeting that accomplish little or that movie industry itself has a tremendous carbon footprint and further exacerbates it when people drive to the movies.
I wonder if they are aware of the positive effects of a warming planet such as longer growing seasons, th increase in arable land and reduced winter heating costs.
I wonder they have seen the documentary, “Pandora’s Promise,” available on the internet and which shows the promise of fourth generation nuclear reactors.
People can demonstrate, protest and demand all they want. But their efforts will have the same affects as King Canute’s as he placed his throne in the surf and ordered the tides to retreat.
