Comment on Anishinaabeg Like Me: Voices from People of Color in Leelanau County by Kathleen Collins

I am an American. You are an American. I am Caucasian. You are Native American. Seven generations ago my grandfather signed the Declaration of Independence. I personally ask your forgiveness for my people coming here. But good has come from that. We have the greatest country. We brought Democracy. The rest of the world has benefited from the ideals of our government. I do not feel like I have white privilege. I worked hard to attain the “American Dream “. No one helped me. I grew up poor. Very poor with 11 siblings. I know that you have struggled in your life. I believe in equality of education. And I support all endeavors to further equality for all. But I will not except the premise that I have to apologize for being white. White privilege is not how I feel at all. I feel we are all in this together. It’s seems racist to call me “White Privileged “. I am an American just as you are an American. I was taught color doesn’t matter. Amen
